C & F Legal began on 25 October 2005 when Kathy Carr & Rick Farr saw a gap in the market for a full-service firm that had strong litigation and commercial skill sets.  Creating a new firm in a small town was a big risk at the time. 

In 2008 law firms were able to become registered companies, and C & F Legal was one of the first law firms in New Zealand to incorporate.  Starting out as a small team of five, we have grown to a team of approximately 20 members.

As business went from strength to strength, and with our team increasing in number, we outgrew our initial offices located at 68 Achilles Avenue, Nelson and purchased our current premises at 211 Bridge Street, Nelson in 2013. 

In 2017 Andrew Shaw became a co-director together with Rick and Kathy, and in 2022 Mark Broad became the fourth director of our firm.

C & F Legal was founded on the philosophy of the working cogs of a clock, hence our motto “Geared to the Result”.  This is based on the idea that we cannot do what we do without the skills of each member our team.  The cogs have to work together make everything function for us and for our clients, and sometimes the smallest cog can be the most important part of the entire operation. 

We value each one of our team members.  Our intention is that each one of our team will enjoy coming to work each day, and that we will care for each other, and for our clients.  We are all responsible for the culture and success of our business.
